About the Band Program
The MIS/HPMS Raider Band is an award-winning program comprised of outstanding and dedicated student musicians. Located in University Park, TX, the Raider Band program introduces band instruments to students and helps develop their musical knowledge and skills. While continually improving and expanding these skills, the musicians perform and compete in individual, ensemble, and full band competitions. In addition, the students participate in social events dedicated exclusively to students in the band program.
The HP Raider Band program consists of three ensembles: 6th Grade Beginning Band, Symphonic Band, and Honors Band.
The 6th Grade Beginning Band is the entry level for students interested in learning a band instrument in Highland Park ISD. During Beginning Band, 6th grade band students learn everything about how to play an instrument, from how to read music, to how to assemble and hold the instrument. By the end of the year, students will learn everything they need to know in order to perform with the competitive bands at HPMS (Symphonic and Honors Bands). Students are introduced to individual competition through Solo contest, which is typically held late in the Spring semester.
Symphonic Band is primarily a 7th grade band, which focuses on continuing the fundamentals started in beginning band and teaching students about ensemble concepts. The band travels to two competitions each year and students are given opportunities for individual and group level contests.
Honors Band is a highly rigorous band which focuses on high school preparation and is primarily geared toward 8th grade band students. This band focuses on advanced individual and group fundamentals. Students in Honors Band compete in two competitions each year, prepare for state and national level contests, and students compete in individual as well as group level contests.
